Victoria Shen's Modern Art Manicures @ Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum

Back in May, I wrote about the increasing popularity of Mondrian style. The simple use of basic colors and lines is more than the sum of its parts. I love it!

In that post, I mentioned modern art manicures. Victoria Shen's modernist manicures started as a pop-up nail spa last March with the Howard Art Project in Dorchester.

She described her manicures as, "an opportunity to meditate over the Modernist legacy while sprawling canvasses of the early 20th century are recreated in miniature on your hands. Choose treatments on site from a catalogue of canonical Modernist paintings. The treatments range from Pollock’s frenetically splashed action paintings performed at the height of the Abstract Expressionist era to Kasimir Malevich’s austere monochromes for a more resigned and aloof effect."

I was so intrigued when I learned about these beautiful tiny works of nail art! As you know, curiosity often gets the best of me, so I emailed her to try and get a manicure. That didn't work out, but luckily I remained on her email list.

Recently, I wrote about how I started giving myself manicures on a regular basis again. Soon after, I learned that Shen will be creating more of her mini masterpieces for the public.

Tomorrow night, Thursday, January 16, 2014, from 5:30pm - 8:30pm, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is having a  Third Thursdays: Midwinter Tropics night. It sounds really fun! There will be music, drinks, food, and several different activities.

There is an admission fee to attend, but once you're in, you can get a single finger treatment by Shen. While you won't be able to get a full manicure this time, one of your fingers will become a work of art!

It's first come first serve, so if you want one of her masterpieces, then be sure to get there early. Also, if you want the full treatment at another time, you can contact her directly via email.

Ah, the Isabella Gardner Museum! I've never been there but it's on my bucket list. I've been reading "The Gardener Heist: the true story of the world's largest unsolved art theft," which is goading me even more to get there. I'm shooting for some time this year to get there. Thanks for this post!!!

chris - Glad you liked it! I've never read the book, but that theft has certainly become part of history. Let me know when you are here! : )
