The FDA's Florentine Frenzy

I'm sure by now that everyone has heard about the Food & Drug Administration's fresh spinach warnings and guidelines. I know that frozen isn't fresh, but vegetables are fresh when their frozen. So, I started wondering if anything was said specifically about frozen spinach. I found this quote on the FDA website.
"FDA advises consumers to not eat fresh spinach or products that contain fresh spinach until further notice. Fresh spinach includes bagged spinach, spinach in a clamshell, and loose spinach purchased from retail establishments such as supermarkets, restaurants and farmers' markets. At this time, FDA has no evidence that frozen spinach, canned spinach and spinach included in pre-made meals manufactured by food companies are affected. These products are safe to eat."

I love spinach! Maybe not as much as Popeye, but I tend to randomly add spinach to lots of different foods to add some nutrients and just to perk up the taste. Whenever I read a menu and see Florentine, which means to serve or dress with spinach, I know that I will probably like that dish.

I'm glad canned and frozen spinach are safe, because tomorrow for breakfast, I'm thinking about a Florentine omelet!

This spinach frenzy is driving me nuts. I mean, I sort of know that if I cook it in soup, it should be safe, cause e-coli is destroyed in heat, but for some reason the fear is preventing me from going near it in any form.

I hope there's never a tomato warning. I could never live through that :-)

vasilisa - Such a pretty name! Thanks for stopping by. This whole thing can make us all feel a bit irrational. I did use the frozen spinach in an omelet and it was great!

wheresmymind - Baby spinach is the best!

Hello Anali,

I enjoy spinach as well, but there are enough greens out there for me to let the gray skies clear before consuming anymore. Popeye is probably avoiding Brutus until this whole mess clears up as well (lol).

Happy Sipping!

What is happening in the States Guys?

I thought fresh is best.

By the way frozen spinach is great if you want to put it into any dishes such as soup, quiche pasta etc

But no good if you want to stir fry.
"Please has anyone ever eaten Canned Spinach!!!!" I can't think of anything worse.
