Hot Pink Afternoon Tea

Can you believe that it's October already? Time is flying by!

So we have to make a special point of setting aside time for things that are important to us.

This month is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I've written here before about how breast cancer impacted my mom. No matter how busy you are, make time for your annual mammogram. It could save your life!

Also take some time to treat yourself every once in a while. You know that I love a nice afternoon tea. Well, I just learned about a special afternoon tea for this month. Starting today, October 1st through October 25th, you can sip for a cause with a Hot Pink Afternoon Tea at the Rowes Wharf Sea Grille.

The tea features a glass of Poggio al Tesoro Cassiopea Rosé rimmed with pink sugar, decorative pastries, a selection of finger sandwiches, scones, tea breads and Devonshire cream and preserves, all designed by Executive Chef Daniel Bruce and Pastry Chef Bill Romiza.

The tea is $39.00 per person and 10% of proceeds will benefit The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Afternoon tea is offered daily from 2:30pm - 4pm. For reservations, call Rowes Wharf Sea Grille at 617.856.7744.

The Pink Ribbon is everywhere now, but do you know its origins? I was reading SELF Magazine on the train last week and learned the history of the pink ribbon. The pink ribbon reached a milestone this year, as it celebrates its 20th birthday.

Evelyn H. Lauder (1936-2011) was the Senior Corporate Vice President and Head of Fragrance Development Worldwide for Estée Lauder. Many of us can thank her for things that we use everyday. She helped name the Clinique brand and led the development of the best-selling fragrances Beautiful and Pleasures.

Lauder's personal experience with  breast cancer led her to team up with Alexandra Penney of SELF Magazine in the creation of the Pink Ribbon in 1992 and to distribute 1.5 million pink ribbons at Estée Lauder cosmetics counters. In 1993, Penney and Lauder deliver 250,000 petitions to First Lady Hillary Clinton, asking for more federal funding for breast cancer research. From 1991 to 2002, funds go up 700%.

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation was founded by Lauder in 1993 and has raised more than $380 million to advance breast cancer research worldwide.

Thank you for this. Not only did I lose a dear friend to breast cancer a little over a year ago, I just had a friend diagnosed this summer, and she had her surgery--a radical mastectomy--last month. In her case, she is a 3rd generation breast cancer victim/soon to be survivor. Her diagnosis came on her 38th birthday.

As is almost always the case, we women have to take care of ourselves. It is up to us to push our own agendas and make our health a Front Burner Issue. Start with yourself first: get a regular mammogram, self-exam, know your body.

And then, always help each other by supporting our causes.

nance - I'm so sorry about the loss of your friend. Hopefully you and your other friend will be celebrating her recovery on her 39th birthday! We definitely have to take care of ourselves and listen to that inner voice if we think that something is wrong. Second opinions are okay!
