Porridge Or Oatmeal?

How many of you remember the story of Goldilocks and The Three Bears? Probably most of you. Many of the themes are probably in our collective unconscious at this point.

But there's something else. The food. Remember the bears were eating porridge that was too hot? For me, food is my reference point for just about everything. Because the food is what fascinates me. Always.

While reading through some blogs a few days ago, I came across a recipe for porridge. Hmmm. I wondered. "What exactly is porridge?" Turns out porridge is oatmeal.

Although it can also refer to some other similar types of hot cereal. According to the Wikpedia entry, porridge was commonly used as prison food in the UK prison system and the slang term "doing porridge" means serving prison time. Learn something new everyday!

Did you ever read the Heidi stories when you were a kid? I used to love them! But what I remember most is that Heidi enjoyed wandering around the beautiful mountains eating  lots of delicious cheese, creamy milk (from goats I think) and bread. There must have been chocolate in there too, now that I think about it, but I don't remember for sure.

Anyway, as a child, this sounded quite wonderful to me, except that it was sad that she was an orphan.  But I digress. Back to porridge or oatmeal. What do you call it?

I was reading an article about how Americans are using more and more British sayings. It's quite interesting and funny! I wonder if more Americans are taking to British spelling as well. Like colour instead of color. And using whilst. I love that word and have been holding myself back from using it. I think my willpower just folded.

Whilst eating my porridge, what else shall I do?

Have a great week everyone!

I like some British things, but not adding a "U" into "color" and "labor". The "O" is not really needed in either word, for that matter.

dmarks - LOL! True the "u" isn't needed. It's more decorative. It's an identifier when you see it though. I immediately realize that the writer most likely didn't grow up in the United States!
