Cooking Club Dinner: Paula Deen

Last week was a very busy food week. And delicious! I'll do separate posts to spread the fun out over the week. Oh! And you can find more of my food writing over at City's Best Boston, where I'm contributing articles each week.

Unfortunately, I'm way behind in visiting blogs and answering your comments. And I've reached the sad conclusion that I'll drive myself nuts if I try to go back and answer them all. So I'll do the best that I can and hopefully that will be okay. I made it a point to answer each and every comment on this blog except for the giveaway posts.

I did it up until last month. Oh well. I guess we all have our breaking points. I still read each and every comment and appreciate them very much. So please don't feel offended if I don't answer your comment. It's not you; it's me. : )

Okay, now to the food! I'll start with a new cooking club that I'm part of. It started with a dinner last month and we decided to try and make it a monthly pot luck. Each person cooks a dish and we make a recipe from a celebrity chef.

Our first cook/chef was Paula Deen. And I have to say that I was hesitant. Very hesitant. But I didn't want to be a difficult new member, so I kept my mouth shut.

I hadn't made any of her recipes before. And whenever I saw her cooking on TV, she was always making an over the top recipe with extreme amounts of sugar, butter, and other random things like marshmallows. That was my perception of her. But now I think that I was unduly harsh and Paula Deen's food isn't as crazy as I thought. It was actually very good.

It was pretty amazing how everything worked out for our meal. We didn't let anyone know what we were each making, except for someone took the entree. I handled dessert. And two other people each had sides. What an awesome group of cooks! The food tasted great. And it looked so pretty too. The recipes from our meal are below. Hopefully I'm linking to the right ones.

Cooking Club Dinner #1

Creamy Squash Soup

Honey Balsamic Green Beans

Baked Sweet Potato Wedges

Honey and Goat Cheese Chicken

Zucchini Bread

We haven't decided on a cook/chef for next month. So far the names tossed around were Jamie Oliver and Rachel Ray. My vote is with Jamie! But I guess I shouldn't judge Rachel.
: )

Any suggestions?

*Updated 6/19/2013* When we picked Paula Deen, we didn't know about her alleged blatant racism. Otherwise, we definitely would have NOT cooked her food! Just read this article. Wow.

BTW, if your new club does anything by Sandra Lee I'm never visiting your blog again!

My uncle gave me a Paul Deen cookbook a few years ago, and I had the same reservations you had. But several of her recipes have been keepers.

chris - OMG! I just watched that video. Funny and frightening at the same time. Why does she always do those types of recipes on TV?

I've never seen Sandra Lee. But from what I hear, she does more of those Rachel Rayish shortcuts. Well, I won't suggest her, but if the majority wants to I'll have no choice. I'll mention your comment though! : )

willow - Nice to know that I wasn't the only one with those reservations!

tracy - Thank you! The writing is fun. I'm actually trying to come up with some new ideas. Let's hope inspiration strikes!

bellini valli - It really is! I'm looking forward to our next dinner.
