Subway Stories: Don't Even Think About It

You'd better pay! The MBTA has had it up to here with fare evaders.

Current law allows MBTA Police to request identification in order to give a non-criminal citation and $15.00 fine the first time someone fails to pay to ride the T. The second time the fine rises to $100.00 and then $250.00 for subsequent offenses. If the fines are not paid, the offender may have their driver's license suspended.

Senate Bill 2721 was introduced to amend the law by allowing not just the MBTA Police, but also other employees and agents of the MBTA to issue these citations. A public hearing was held today, Wednesday, October 11th. We'll see what happens next.

gunfighter - I'm sure they will! : )
I accidentally got a free ride all the way from the airport to Cambridge (I got on the silverline through the middle doors). But it was 9 am and I had been up since 3:30 to catch a 6:00 am flight and I was completely out of it! I am glad I didn't know about the $15 fine... Geez, what a scene that would have been.
