A Syndicated Post On BlogHer: Are Food Bloggers Negotiating Opportunities?

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a Guest Post on Food Blog Alliance, a blog where food bloggers discuss issues related to food blogs. The post is about negotiation, women, and food blogging.

The post was well received and I received an email from an Editor at BlogHer asking if I'd let them syndicate the post on their website. Well, of course! What an honor to be asked!

Today the post is up! Please go on over and take a look at the post: Are Food Bloggers Negotiating Opportunities?

Since I wrote the original post, I watched this video on TED on why we have too few women leaders. One of the things discussed by Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, is that women don't negotiate as much as men.

This is a huge issue. Hopefully we can get this discussion going and make a change. We have to negotiate for ourselves!

First of, congratulations! That's really exciting! Secondly, I read your piece. Very inspiring and so very true. Sometimes it's hard to get up the courage to ask for things and I've found that it takes practice to feel comfortable doing it.

Great work!

I won't swear I know the answer but I think a lot of the non-negotiation of women food bloggers is that we have a history of sharing recipes and don't give it the import that is really involved in working through a recipe, photographing it, and reviewing it for others to follow. Men make it a career, give it jargon, and then demand payment for it.

We just love to make someone happy with a great dish and can't wait to share the recipe -- because, someone asked.

I make a great Brandy and my Bristol Cream is pretty good, if I do say so, myself. I shared some over the holiday. One man got very indignant because I wouldn't give him the recipe -- "...because, all you did was ferment some fruit... it's no big deal!" Well, I'm not some famous distiller, but try and get their recipes! It's my recipe and not for distribution but he was trying to intimidate me into giving it to him because he liked it and wanted to make some of his own! There. That takes care of that. I'm supposed to give him my recipe or I'm a bad person... go figure.

I was hoping times had changed but it doesn't sound like it. I hope it changes. I really do.

Come visit when you can and don't forget to check out my other blog, Rockin' Chair Reflections, too! Happy New Year!

Hi Lisa,

Just finished reading your post at Food Blog Alliance and wanted to let you know how strongly I feel about the topic at hand (negotiation). I have written posts encouraging my fellow foodies to take themselves and their work seriously and to start considering their blogs a business. If they don't, who will? And if we, as a group, don't start to ask for what we deserve, then we are losing a valuable opportunity to create strength in our numbers.

Earlier this year I took my interest in supporting my fellow food bloggers one step further and launched Kitchen Play, a website devoted to connecting food bloggers with the food PR world. The result is a dynamic site that offers food bloggers paying assignments for doing what they already do so well: recipe development, food photography and writing about it all.

I would love to have you drop by for a look. I'm sure you'll recognize many of the participating food bloggers and sponsors! And thank you, most of all, for voicing such an important point of view for all of us.

Best,
Casey Benedict

tsbk - Thank you! Yes, it does take a bit of courage, but after a while it becomes second nature. And it's a very nice feeling of accomplishment when you get something that you ask for!

sharlene - Great points! That guy was outrageous! Wow. In one breath he downplays the importance of your recipe, yet is upset that you wouldn't give it to him.

casey - Welcome! I'm glad you liked the post and I appreciate the comment. Kitchen Play looks like a great idea! I looked at your website briefly, but will have to go back another time. I'm very interested in learning more.
