World Kindness Day - November 13, 2010

It's just the dawn of World Kindness Day. But I'm a night owl, so I'm still up.

Officially today is the day that Se'Lah and Anyes have organized a collective kindness event.

I started a little early and it was just something very simple. Earlier this evening, I was doing my food shopping at Hannaford Supermarket. As I was walking down the aisles, I was thinking about what I'd do. What random kindness could I do for someone.

Well, there are always lots of things to do, but nothing in particular was coming to mind. As I was heading towards the registers to pay, I noticed a large pile of boxes. Each box had a bowl with hands holding them. On the side, the box had the words Helping Hands Give A Meal.

I grabbed a box and looked at it more closely. Each box contains food that can be purchased for donation to a local food pantry. Well, that seemed like something that I could do. So I bought a box that will be given to a Quincy food pantry.

The Helping Hands program has been around for the past couple of years, according to the website, and has "donated over 158,000 Helping Hands boxes; 45,076 cans of soup; 39,557 boxes of pasta; 29,344 boxes of cereal; and $185,286 to local food banks and organizations throughout Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont."

Sounds like a great program to me! I was happy to give and I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone else is doing today. But time for me to get some sleep for now.
