Shhhh. Please don't wake the vanilla.

It's sleeping. When it wakes up, it will be vanilla extract. It's an 8 week long process and I cannot wait to taste the fruit of my efforts. Or would that be the vanilla of my efforts?

Around the food blogosphere, I started seeing recipes for diy (do it yourself) vanilla extract. I bookmarked this one from Chocolate & Zucchini to use later.

I found some decently priced vanilla beans at Trader Joe's. Purchased two mini bottles of vodka. And found a nicely shaped and sized glass jar that I was getting ready to recycle. Instead of recycling it, I decided to reuse it. How's that for being green?

On June 1st, I did the preparation per the recipe and stored the jar in my cabinet. Every once in a while, I give it a good shake, then put it back gently. Like Clotilde said, I don't want to frighten it.

The end of next week will be August already. Can you believe it? Luckily, summer won't be over yet. And I'm going to have some wonderful homemade vanilla extract to try.

I hope your vanilla extract comes out wonderfully but have to comment on your comment about "summer won't be over yet." What summer? Boston? Not in 2009. No real summer has happened here save for about 5 or 6 sunny days since June.

How fantastic. I had no idea this was so simple. I have vodka and a nice, dark cabinet, so I am definitely going to try this out. Now that my work project from the fiery place below is over, I can look for little domestic-y projects like this.

sai - You're welcome! Glad that you found this post useful.

can-can - Well, it certainly has not been the summer of my dreams as far as weather goes, but it is still summer nevertheless. The past few days have been great and this week is looking even better.

s - These are fun little projects. I'm glad you're going to try it. Let me know how it goes!
