Happy New Year!
For this first day of the year, I tried something new. Yesterday, I bought some new flours at a wonderful store here in Quincy called Good Health Natural Foods. They have every type of flour you can think of, but I restrained myself and just bought two: soy and buckwheat.
They also had a bunch of nut butters and I bought sunflower seed nut butter. CapCity said it was good, so I thought I'd try it. This store has so many different cool things. You can find just about any type of natural foods or beauty products that exist. I was originally just going to buy avocado oil, but left with a big bag of goodies!
I ended up noticing the flour section, because the day before I was paging through my cookbook Pancakes From Morning to Midnight, by Dorie Greenspan. I noticed a nice recipe for Winter Buckwheat Pancakes, but did not have buckwheat flour. Suddenly the flour was right in front of me! How could I resist?
I've had an extremely lazy couple of days welcoming in 2008. I watched these two movies and highly recommend them both. I didn't bring in the year with a bang, but pancakes will do for now.
Adapted from Pancakes From Morning to Midnight
Winter Buckwheat Pancakes
3/4 cup buckwheat flour
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1 1/2 cups vanilla rice milk
2 eggs
1/2 stick butter melted = 4 T
3 T honey
Combine ingredients in medium bowl with wooden spoon. I use spray oil to coat the pan, but you can use butter or oil. Heat pan and then pour batter onto heated pan to form pancakes the size that you like. When the pancakes start to bubble, turn them over with a spatula, then cook until browned.

Happy New Year, Anali!
(By the way, a new CD is on its way.)
I hope u like the sunflower butter - i did warn u that it's got more bite than the others, right? ;-)
I discovered some great & REALLY inexpensive wines at Yes! and Trader Joe's = two organic markets in the DC area (will have to see if they're coming to the NYC area:-). Maybe next time I'll get an entire organic brunch: pancakes & wine included;-)
I love buckwheat pankcakes.
suldog - I got the CD and it was in tact! I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet though. : D
emon - Happy New Year to you too! : )
rachel - Welcome! I'm still learning about all the flours myself. I had no idea there were so many different types until I started reading food blogs and saw what people were baking with. It's pretty cool!
Oh and there is a wonderful scene in the movie "Stranger Than Fiction" when Will Ferrell gives his girlfriend, who is a baker, a bunch of different flours. It's the sweetest scene! I love that movie!
big boys oven - Happy New Year! I think starting the year slowly and relaxed is definitely the way to do it!
bipolarlawyercook - I didn't know that OSJL carried it, but I have to admit that I find no joy or pleasure shopping in that store whatsoever. It's the complete opposite of Trader Joe's. I don't think OSJL could make the store any less attractive if they tried.
