Some Halloween Fun!

Go here and you can carve your own pumpkin. I'm warning you. This is seriously addictive. I've carved about ten pumpkins already. Happy Halloween! And speaking of Halloween...

When we go out to eat, we shouldn't have to wonder if we'll be getting a trick or a treat. Eating out shouldn't be scary. I read a really interesting article in the L.A. Times here. The article proposes a Diners' Bill of Rights. Genius! There are certainly things that we should be able to expect when we go out to eat. The writer, Leslie Brenner, is mainly talking about problems with Los Angeles restaurants, but I think that most of us have experienced at least some of these problems in every city in the world.

The first our Dining Rights is hospitality. Here is an excerpt.

"Hospitality exists when you believe that the other person is on your side," writes Danny Meyer in his book "Setting the Table." Meyer is founder and co-owner of 11 restaurants in New York, including Union Square Cafe, which long has been known for its exemplary service. Further, "hospitality is present when something happens for you. It is absent when something happens to you. Those two simple prepositions -- for and to -- express it all."
I so agree about what is being done for you as opposed to you. I hope you read the rest of the article. I especially liked #14, which is bread. From my last few posts, you know how I feel about bread. Bread sets the tone for the meal. I shouldn't have to ask for it. It would be nice if all restaurants took this list into consideration. We'll see. Is there anything else you would add to the list?

Oh, hear hear! I hate the odious, "Are you still working on that?" as if I were a farm animal at a hayrack. I dine, I do not labor at my meals. And I'd like to add a ban on the waitperson who crouches down or sits at the table with the diners as he takes the order. Oh my.

capcity - Happy Halloween! I hope you have a good one! ; )

nance - I do hate when they hover, but I also hate being ignored. The sitting and crouching thing hasn't happened very often. Maybe once or twice. I wonder why they do that...
