Lovely Lavender

My mom has some beautiful plants and flowers in the backyard, including lots of lavender. I've been trying to get some of it for years. I was over my parents for my father's birthday last night and my mom gave me this beautiful lavender plant!

The scent is out of this world! My mom dug it up, roots and all, so I can plant it. I got home late last night and wasn't going to do any gardening, so I rinsed off the roots, did a little trimming here and there, then put it in a vase with some water. This morning the leaves had perked up and it looks wonderful. I'm tempted to leave it in the vase. I might cut off a piece and leave it in a vase and plant the rest. What a great plant. I just read that it's part of the mint family. Who knew? You learn something new everyday.

I love the smell of lavender too. I tried to grow some last summer in my back yard and the dogs ate it all. Maybe I'll try an inside plant next time.

Huh. I had no idea it was part of the mint family. I love lavender and I love all kinds of mint. Now I know there's a connection. Thank you!

I LOVE Lavender! Wish I had a green thumb - that gene was given to ONE of my siblings...the rest of us enjoy vicariously:-). I've learned to leave most plants where I find them - have killed more than i'm proud of...but have a couple of tough buggers that aren't as interesting as lavendar...
thanx for sharing!

Just a little side note...
Hawaiian Bread is a really sweet tasting bread that can be found occasionaly in the grocery store. It's sold in a round loaf or as buns. I really don't see it too much any more (my mom used to buy it a lot when I was young) so when I do, I always buy some.

starry nights - The smell is almost hypnotic it's so calming!

asha - I started cutting it into smaller pieces. I want to have some all over my apartment! And that's so true about the scent being good for sleeping, I have some lavender + vanilla aromotherapy pillow mist. It's wonderful!

something from me - How sweet! ; ) Is that a common rhyme? I've never heard it before.

tera - Thank you! I'm definitely going to plant some!

amisha - That's interesting. I never really thought about the climate that it grows in. I hope that your experiment by your window works!

jeseem - Thanks! You're right!

nina - I wonder if your dogs's breath smelled like lavender after!

suldog - You're welcome!

jac - I'm sure you'll love it!

capcity - You're welcome! I'm pretty good with most plants, but I can't seem to keep an African Violet alive. My mom has the same problem with them and she can grow anything!

pom d'api - It's definitely allergy season. I've been sniffling away. I think oak causes me the most trouble.

catalyst0527 - I agree. I feel more connected to the earth when I have things growing around me. Were you growing beans? I know that haricot verts are green beans from some soup that I made.

kaylee - Yes they do! ; )

lisa francisco aka aviana - LOL! You are hilarious! Well, I just put up another food post, so I hope you'll like that one!

nina - Thanks for the info!

david sullivan - Oh I love lilacs too! I haven't seen any for a while. The smell is intoxicating!

sharon - Welcome! Thank you for stopping by and I'm glad that I inspired you! I'm sure your arrangements will be beautiful.

anali--lavender is one of my favorite herbs. i cook with its blossoms all the time. it's lovely with chicken and terrific with chocolate. i also make a very nice lavender shortbread cookie. when you plant it, just make sure you use a loose perlite or sandy soil and keep its feet dry most of the time. it likes full sun and is very heat tolerant.

I'm not terribly crazy about the scent of Lavender Anali...but I have used the oil of lavender from time to time to induce sleep and it's good for burns too. I have a bunches of it growing in my backyard and it looks oh so pretty alongside the sage and other herbs I have growing there.

nance - I was thinking that it would be nice to cook with too. I still haven't planted it yet. I have to buy some more soil, so thanks for the advice.

lotus reads - I love sage! It smells amazing too!

I love lavender. I used to look after a large old fashioned estate garden and the lawn edges were marked with mini hedges of lavender, they were a joy to trim.
Not far from where I live they occasionally plant Lavender commercially, it's an amazing sight, especially when dotted with wild poppies as well.
Try adding lavender when making jams, it's yummy!

barkfoot - Welcome! I'm really intrigued by the thought of using lavender in food. The jam sounds wonderful! Any recipe you would like to share? ; )
